He is a surgical gastroenterologist whose work includes management of diseases (stones, tumors, infections, etc) arising in the stomach, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, colon and the anorectum. His advanced skill with laparoscopic techniques enables him to do most of this with minimal access translating into increased comfort for the patient. He is frequently exposed to managing complex GI cases referred by his colleagues.

He is one of the pioneers of bariatric surgery in the country.

He is an active member of ASI, IASG, IAGES, AMASI, IASO, OSSI and IFSO.

He has organized many single theme conferences on important topics related to GI surgery.

He has authored three monographs; on biliary surgery, liver surgery and bariatric nutrition.

He has publications on gallbladder mucosa, acute pancreatitis, bronchobiliary fistula, colorectal cancer, ileosigmoid knotting and complex anal fistula.

His stint as a teacher from 2000 to 2006 in Medical College Kolkata is still remembered fondly by his students.

He is the first surgeon in the world to perform a laparoscopic adrenalectomy in a 3-month-old baby.
